How 5-MeO-DMT Came to be known as “The God Molecule”
I recently made a relatively short video that I’ve uploaded to The Entheogenic Evolution YouTube channel where I share my personal story of how and why I came to call 5-MeO-DMT “The God Molecule” back in 2008. To the best of my knowledge, I’m the first person to have explicitly used this term in reference to 5-MeO. While this is now widely used around the world in reference to 5, it’s rarely discussed where it came from, who started it, or why. In this video, I provide answers to all this.
Ultimately, this was a conscious choice that would serve multiple ends simultaneously. Back in 2008, there was very little awareness of 5-MeO-DMT in the psychedelic world, let alone beyond it. As DMT was already known as “The Spirit Molecule,” as coined by Rick Strassman, I wanted to distinguish 5 from DMT with a similar name that also differentiated the relative phenomenology of the two. While DMT gives rise to ego-processed content of “visionary beings and realms” as experienced by the perceiving self that still exists between the divide of self and other, 5 goes beyond such duality into a nondual state of awareness where all of reality, the self included, is directly experienced as unitary in nature, infinite, undivided, universal, and intelligent and composed of the ultimate energy of unconditional love - AKA, “God.”
